Immerse yourself in the soul of Varanasi on foot, as every Ghat unfolds timeless tales, profound spirituality, and vibrant life

Ghat Explorations

The term “Ghat” often perplexes visitors from abroad, yet it carries deep spiritual significance. A Ghat is a riverbank adorned with steps that lead devotees from the land to the sacred waters. Varanasi is home to 84 Ghats, beginning with Assi Ghat in the south and culminating at Adi Keshav, where the Varuna and Ganga rivers meet in the north. These Ghats represent the 12 zodiac signs and the 7 layers of the human body, reflecting the 7 strata of the atmosphere—multiplying 12 by 7 yields 84. Among them, five Ghats hold a special reverence for their profound spiritual significance. Walking along these Ghats or sitting on their steps, whether listening to ancient legends or simply gazing at the flowing Ganga Ji, offers a tranquil experience that connects you deeply to the city’s timeless soul.
